由来・語源
「天」は空・宇宙、「文」は模様・現象・記録を表す。astronomy はギリシア語 astron（星）と nomos（法則）に由来する。
説明
「天文」は古典漢語では天体・暦象・星のしるしを意味したが、蘭学・洋学の受容を通じて astronomy の訳語として近代科学の語彙になった。1795年『和蘭天説』には「天文学三道あり」とあり、天体の位置・運動・宇宙構造を扱う学問として説明される。今日では「天文学」「天文台」「天文現象」などの基幹語である。
