由来・語源
「慣」は慣れ親しむ・習慣を意味し、「行」は行為・行うことを意味する。習慣的に行われる行為・やり方という字義。customはラテン語consuetudo（習慣）に由来し、繰り返されることで形成される社会規範を意味する。
説明
慣習・慣例として繰り返されてきた行為・様式を指す語として、明治の法制・社会文書に用いられた。英仏法における慣習法（customary law）の翻訳において、法的拘束力を持つ慣例を表す術語として整備され、商慣行・取引慣行など経済・商業の文脈でも広く定着した。「慣行法」「商慣行」など複合語の形でも用いられる。
