由来・語源

「区」は区切る・分けること、「別」はわけることを意味する。違いに応じて分けるという字義で distinction / classification に対応した。

説明

「区別」は古くからものを分ける意をもつ漢語だが、明治期に distinction や classification に対応する論理・学術語として意味が整えられた。類似した事物の差異を見分けること、ある基準に従って分類することを表し、哲学・論理学・自然科学・社会科学で基本語となった。近代知の方法としての「差異の認識」を支える語である。
