由来・語源
「伝」は伝わること、「染」は病や毒がうつること、「病」はやまいを表す。contagious はラテン語 contagio（接触・感染）に由来する。
説明
「伝染病」は、病原体が人や動物の間で移り広がる病気を表す医学語で、contagious disease や communicable disease に対応する。1820年『遁花秘訣』に「伝染病」の用例が見える。近代衛生行政ではコレラ・赤痢・結核などの流行管理に不可欠な語となり、現在は法制度上「感染症」の語が広く用いられる。
