由来・語源
「輓近」は近ごろ・近代、「史」は歴史を表す。modern はラテン語 modo（今）に由来する。
説明
「輓近史」は、近い時代、特に近代以降の歴史を表す語で、modern history や recent history に対応する。明治期の歴史教育・啓蒙書では、古代史・中世史などに対して、同時代に近い欧米や日本の政治・社会変動を扱う分野名として用いられた。現代では「近代史」「近現代史」が一般的である。
