由来・語源
「分」は分けること・分割を意味し、「配」は割り当て・配分を意味する。「分けて割り当てる」という字義。distributionはラテン語distributio（分配・分類）に由来する。
説明
経済学のdistributionの訳語として明治期に定着した和製漢語。生産された富・所得を社会の各階層や生産要素（労働・資本・土地）に振り分けるという政治経済学の概念を表す語として、明治期の翻訳書を通じて広まった。「分配論」「所得分配」「富の分配」など経済学の基本語彙として定着し、社会主義思想の文脈でも重要な概念語となった。
