由来・語源
「感」は外界の刺激に反応・感じることを意味し、「性」は本質的な性質・働きを意味する。「外界に感じる本質的能力」という字義。Sinnlichkeitはドイツ語Sinn（感覚）に由来する。
説明
カント哲学のドイツ語Sinnlichkeit（英: sensibility）の訳語として、西周が哲学用語の整備に際して用いた語。カントの認識論において感性は「時間・空間という純粋直観の形式を持ち、外界の刺激を受容・整理する認識能力」と定義され、悟性（Verstand）・理性（Vernunft）と並ぶ重要概念として定着した。1881年刊の『哲学字彙』にも収録された。
