すべての物体が存在・運動する三次元の広がり。カント哲学では外的直観の純粋形式。

自由な・使用可能な・占有されていない連続した広がり・場所。

この部屋には十分な空間がない。
由来・語源
「空」は空・虚ろを意味し、「間」は間・ひろがりを意味する。「何もない広がり・虚ろな間」という字義。spaceはラテン語spatium（広がり・間隔）に由来する。
説明
哲学的概念としてのspaceおよびドイツ語Raumの訳語として明治初期に定着した語。カント哲学において「空間」は「時間」とともに「感性の純粋直観形式」として位置づけられ、西周らによる西洋哲学の導入過程で整備された。近代物理学（ニュートン力学）の絶対空間の概念も同じ訳語で受け容れられた。1881年の『哲学字彙』にも収録された。
